re you looking to pick up your first pair of cycling sunglasses or have heard about goodr and just want to know if they are any "good".
I’ve been using them for over a year and in summary they have been great, providing the essential protections you would want in sunglasses and are a cost effective way to add some color and style to any cycling outfit. I also find them to be just as good off the bike as well for everyday activities like hiking, going to the beach, and driving. In the following sections I’ll dive into why I’ve been happy with these sunglasses so far and why you may like them as well.
What are goodr Sunglasses
Before we even get into it, goodr is a sunglass company that has been growing in popularity since they started back in 2015. Originally their goal was to make affordable and stylish sunglasses for running, but in the last two years they expanded to cycling and other activities.
Their bright colors, mix of classic and fun styles, and price have gotten them a lot of attention and have helped them stand out from some of the other large brands like Oakley and Roka.
With that said let’s get into more of the details of why you may want to check them out.
Solid Protection, Weight, and Comfort
Sunglasses should protect your eyes and goodr cycling sunglasses come with UV 400 protection which means they provide 100% protection from ultraviolet lights that can be harmful to your eyes. In addition, their sunglass lineup is also Polarized which can be helpful with reducing glare, especially if you ride by large reflective surfaces such as oceans and lakes.
Lastly they are relatively light and have rubberized pads to help them stay on your face so they don’t move when you sweat as you cycle or run. From my experience this is largely true, however some models do this better than others. For instance when I use their aviator style sunglasses, the Mach G, they tend to have a bit looser fit on my head and smaller contact points around my nose than their more cycling focused glasses the Wrap G.
This makes sense due to the styling but as a result I find that when I’m going on some long climbs in the heat, the Mach G will occasionally slide down the bridge of my nose . It’s not too troublesome but something to consider when you’re looking at the many different options offered on the site.
They are Affordable and Offer Free Shipping and Returns
If you’ve been looking at cycling sunglasses you’ve probably seen many brands that are easily in the $150 - $300 plus range, which if you add this to the cost of cycling apparel can add up to a lot.
goodr glasses start at $20 and most don’t go higher than $50 with the exception of some of their ski goggles. At this price range it’s much less of a financial commitment than other brands out there. For example my Rokas were about 3x the price compared to goodr at around $150. In addition, with Goodr they offer free shipping and returns so there is low risk to trying out a pair if you’re not by one of their retail locations to try them on.
One side benefit of the lower price point is I could build a collection of sunglasses for different purposes. For example, I have the more casual pair with the Mach G that I could wear off the bike with casual clothing and then with the Wrap G I intentionally picked up their lightest lens model so when I went out on some short early morning rides or evening rides where the sun was at it’s lowest I could still have protection and see clearly. For the longest time I would not take sunglasses with me on these rides as they would be too dark and I did not feel like spending another $150+ dollars for just this use case. Since I picked up this additional pair it’s been great to have something for these low light or overcast conditions.
They are Low Maintenance
Sunglasses in my opinion should be low maintenance and something you should not have to worry much about before going out on a ride. The goodr glasses I’ve had so far have all been easy to maintain. Goodr also provides you with a little maintenance card with your glasses and the steps to keep them in proper shape.
As you can see, all you really need to keep them clean is a little warm soap and water along with a microfiber cloth to wipe them down. Finally, I have not had one loosen or fall apart on me so far over the last year I’ve been using them so that passes as low maintenance in my book.
Are they worth it?
I’m sure you can guess from the above points but yes I think goodr sunglasses are worth it. I’ve enjoyed swapping between the ones I’ve picked up over the last year and have put them through the paces as I use one every time I get on the bike. They provide the protections you would want in sunglasses and have the necessary grips to ensure they stay as planted as possible on your face through a variety of different activities from cycling to running. Finally, at the price point they don’t just give you a select few options to choose from so you should be able to find one that fits your look and face shape.
I do want to mention that my partners glasses appears to be experiencing some wear and tear on the lenses but this has not affected the experience when using them so far. These are also oddly the least used of the bunch as the other three appear to be holding up just fine.
Where Can you Check Them Out?
You can browse their collection online or they are now in multiple retailers so you check if one is nearby here. Lastly, if you happen to be in the LA area they have a retail store in Venice and host monthly rides.
